Policy Statement

Oxford Middle School students are subject to the policies of the Oxford City Board of Education as contained in Code of Student Conduct and to the rules and regulations of Oxford Middle School as detailed in the Oxford Middle School Student Handbook or as communicated by the Administration.

Promotion and Retention Policy

The Board instructs the Superintendent to develop and maintain instructional objectives

and performance standards for each grade level within the School District. Parents/legal

guardians/custodians and students shall be made aware of the objectives and standards at

the beginning of each school year via the use of written communication. Periodically

during the year, parents and students shall be provided written evaluation reports and oral

evaluation reports during teacher-parent conferences of the progress each student is

making. The grading system used to measure student progress toward achieving the

predetermined objectives and performance standards shall be applied consistently

throughout the School System.

The Board instructs the Superintendent to establish the criteria for promotion and

retention. Promotion of a student from one grade to the next shall be based solely on that

individual student's achievement of the minimum skills necessary to qualify for

promotion. A copy of the promotion and retention plan shall be made available to the

parents.

K-1

No student shall be allowed to pass to a higher grade if the student fails to master the

established standards for a particular grade level, level of learning, or subject matter

content achievement level. The decision as to whether to promote a kindergarten/first

grade student to the next grade shall rest with that student's classroom teacher and school

principal.

2-8

Grades 2-8 with a yearly average of less than 60% in either math or language will result

in non-promotion.
